Crime to Lowest Rate in 6 Years

The number of victims of crime in Barnsley has fallen by 3,000 this year compared with the last, with overall crime in Barnsley falling by over 13 per cent.

“Crime is now at the lowest level it has been in six years”, said Barnsley’s District Commander, Chief Superintendent Andy Brooke.

“We have worked tremendously hard with the support of our partners to achieve this excellent result, helping to make Barnsley a safer place to live, work and visit.”

House burglary is now at its lowest level for six years with a 60 per cent reduction in offences. Barnsley has the lowest burglary rate in South Yorkshire.

Burglary of commercial premises has almost halved over the past six years.

Vehicle crime has also fallen to half the level it was in 2002/03 and is another category that is now at a six-year low.

In the past year there have been 1,000 fewer incidents of criminal damage compared with the previous year. Violent crime is now at the lowest level it has been in three years.

Chief Superintendent Andy Brooke said: “We are achieving some fantastic results in our fight against crime in Barnsley. We have tremendous support from our partners and the help we get from the public is first rate.

“The challenge now is for us to ensure people hear and understand these reductions in crime and feel better about their communities.

“We all need to be proud of the role we play in developing Barnsley which is a town that is moving and changing rapidly, and we are determined to play our part in its success and development.”
