Metal thieves proving hot to handle for police

Metal thieves have struck more than 4,000 times in South Yorkshire in the last 10 months, police have revealed.

The county has turned into one of the county's crime hotspots when it comes to metal theft.

Officers dealt 1,800 offences in Sheffield, 1,000 in Doncaster, 800 in Barnsley and 570 in Rotherham between April last year and January 2012.

Meanwhile, three men were arrested following the discovery of allegedly stolen cable near West Road, Pogmoor.

Police were called late on Thursday night and the men - two from Barnsley, aged 47 and 32, and another of no fixed abode, aged 27, were duly arrested and interviewed by British Transport Police officers.

They have been bailed until Friday, March 23.

It is alleged the cable was stolen from the railway at Pogmoor.
